John Cage

Sonatas & Interludes

for prepared piano

What does music has in common with screws? Normally precious few. But nevertheless, there can be some. Whenever the American composer John Cage provides the strings of a piano with screws, nuts, pieces of plastic and rubber strips, then there arises a tender, sensitive world of sounds, which reminds rather of far eastern meditative sounds as to the thundering of a grand piano. An unexpected sound world enthralls the audience.

‍

The complete cycle (approx. 70 minutes) is presented together with an introduction to this sensitive music, associated with texts and quotations from John Cage. After the concert it is worthwhile to have a look into the the interior of the grand piano.

A recording of the Sonatas & Interludes has become published at CordAria (CDs).
